Review

I am a sucker for a good adventure movie but skeptical at first of National Treasure. You’re thinking Nicholas Cage, Disney, PG-13, producers of Pirates of the Caribbean, ehhh. Well, the movie wasn’t half-bad. Cage plays an obsessed history buff searching after the greatest treasure of all time that is obviously linked to his ancient ancestors. The only way to find the treasure is to steal the Declaration of Independence, which has the map on the back of course, and run around the east coast with reckless abandon.

Its pretty clear that the makers of the movie wanted this to be the next Indiana Jones but it falls short. While all the little clues and historical references are interesting and cute, they aren’t smart enough to carry the movie. Also the dueling treasure hunter rivalry between Cage and friend turned enemy Sean Bean does not particularly work as it is now. What also bothered me were the frequent shifts in time and place. There were points in the movie where one moment they were in D.C. and the next in Philly and the Next in New York. This movie is far fetched, especially with the ending but I didn’t expect it not to be. Its enjoyable viewing but Nicholas Cage is no Harrison Ford.
