Summary

Bond is back ready to save the world from evil villains, again. Pierce Brosnan makes his debut as 007 and does his best Sean Connery impression.

Review

While this movie came out before I became a die hard Bond fan, it is still solid. It has all the expected parts to a James Bond films cars, guns, gadgets, action, women and a decent plot. But what stands out is Brosnan. While he is no Sean Connery or Roger Moore, he is certainly more capable than others to play the role such as George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton. Pierce is smooth, suave and steady as Englands top secret agent.

While the standard Russians planning to steal a secret weapon with the help of a double agent is pretty stock, the filmmakers pull of the plot with exciting action and decent casting of character like Sean Bean as Trevelyan and Judy Dench as “M.” While this is an enjoyable film and a strong showing for Brosnan, (better than his three other Bond films he did after Goldeneye), it just doesn’t compare to the Bond films of the 60s and 70s starring Connery or Roger Moore. Back then there was a sense of class and authenticity to the series and role. With this movie I feel that the producers wanted to somehow attempt to maintain the dignity originally created by Ian Fleming and Robert Broccoli while bringing the franchise to the new super action stunt market that developed in the mid to late 90s. So while I recommend this film, I would suggest learning its roots first with a viewing of Goldfinger or The Man with the Golden Gun.
