Summary
Anderson chronicles the rise and fall of “gifted” 70’s porn star Dirk Diggler.
Review
When one first hears the word “porn,” one of two reactions occurs either your ears perk up and you get excited or you become offended and put off. Either way, you’ll like Boogie Nights. Yes, it’s about the porn industry in the 70’s but it’s more about the characters within the story. Mark Walhberg is excellent as the eager, naïve and willing to please young porn stud who becomes the famous Dirk. Burt Reynolds also puts in a great performance as the mentor.
Writer director Anderson nails the time period with great dialogue and scene structure with music also playing a big role in the film. Sex, drugs and profanity are rampant throughout the film but were just a sign of the times. My only problem with the film is that it drags on for a little too long, all the way into the early 80’s. And while some male viewers might take issue with Diggler’s twelve-inch surprise at the end, it gives a little something something to the female viewers who had the horrible pleasure of seeing a topless Heather Graham.
This movie is hilarious and if you can put aside your preconceptions of porn stars, all I can say is “Feast on this.”
