Summary
Based on the life and music of legend Johnny Cash, this movie focuses on his relationship with June Carter and his struggle to be a success.
Review
Take away the fact that this film chronicles the life of Johnny Cash and here’s what you’re left with: an endless string of cliches. A rock star does drugs. He cheats on his wife with groupies. The “establishment” doesn’t like the message in his music. How many times have we seen all of this?
So what makes the movie work? Why should we care about this troubled star? There are two main reasons Phoenix and Witherspoon. The stars truly encompass their roles, using their actual voices for every song and reveling in the live performances that made the real Cash and June Carter such a success. Witherspoon’s mix of southern spunk and quiet desperation makes a viewing worth your while all by itself.
There’s no doubt that both these leads will earn Oscar nominations. Phoenix is one of the more underrated actors out there, always perfect in the role of intense brooder. He takes it even further this time portraying the “Man in Black,” causing someone yours truly who had barely any knowledge of this legend to look further into his life after seeing the film.
