Summary
Clueless police lieutentant Frank Drebin stumbles his way through an important case and into the hearts of viewers for life.
Review
From the files of Police Squad? More like, from the files of utter hilarity! You can’t help but laugh at each expression of Lieutenant Frank Drebin (Nielson), as he bumbles his way from clue to clue in this comedy classic. This is the film that basically started the genre of idiotic, clueless detectives (every subsequent Nielson movie comes to mind) and, as is so often the case, you can’t ever compete with the original.
Whether he is shooting at his own car, blown up airbag exploding out the windows, or butchering the national anthem, everything Drebin does reeks of humor. Tears streamed down my face when I first watched the scenes in which he portrayed an exuberant, confused umpire. In the end, Drebin saves the Queen and, with each viewing of this movie, saves the audience from taking anything too seriously. A supporting role by a pre-homicidal OJ Simpson just adds to the entertainment value.
