Summary

Sentenced to community service after a DUI arrest, a hotshot lawyer is forced to coach a hapless youth hockey team and confront his own personal demons. Together, they all become winners. sniff

Review

The feel good hockey story of the early ’90s, which coincidentally came out about the same time as a Disney owned NHL expansion team with the same name began play in Southern California. These original Ducks were Minnesotans, though, and started out as a bunch of nobodies until coach Gordon Bombay rescued them. Arrested for DUI and ordered to coach a youth hockey team as his debt to society. Not only does he breathe new life into the winless but fun-loving group, but the hotshot attorney, a former hockey player himself, finds personal redemption.

One victory after another, the Ducks build confidence and coast into the league finals against the powerful Hawks, led by Gordon’s former coach Jack Reilly (Smith), a rather pompous guy if you ask me. But the rag-tag Ducks have spirit, and thanks to portly smart aleck goalie Goldberg, all around good kid Charlie (Jackson), a female figure skater, and a rough and tumble dude with a mean slap shot, they give the Hawks all they can handle.

Pretty formulaic and not spectacular, but certainly not bad. More than can be said for its many sequels. The NHL should lobby for a 13th anniversary re-release in an attempt to revive its moribund attendance.
