Review
Ghost World, as its title suggests, evokes the not quite adulthood of the lead characters, Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson), who drift through their post high school life without any real direction. What sets this flick apart from say, anything on the WB, is the fact that Dan Clowes has populated this script with realistic, if not quite real, characters, especially Steve Buscemi’s lonely blues enthusiast that the two leads torment after spying his “missed connections” ad in the newspaper.
There’s an authenticity about Ghost World that’s disarming and captivating at the same time, especially for anyone who’s been a little left of center and found high school social politics to be awful. You may laugh out loud at Enid’s barbs and childish behaviour, but you feel a little sympathy for her at the same time. Quirky, funny, and touching those all describe this little movie.
