Summary

The completely original tale of an inner-city drug dealer who leaves his life of crime behind in pursuit of his true passion. Rapping.

Review

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson seeks to emulate his mentor and producer, Eminem, with a semi-autobiographical foray onto the big screen. However, where the Emniem vehicle 8 Mile met surprising critical acclaim for its acting performances and ability to detach the star from his own celebrity to create a true underdog story, his protege should receive no such praise. Get Rich or Die Tryin’ wastes its time with played-out themes and scenes from the urban underworld and leaves us no clue how the rap phenomenon ever became so.

If Marcus, 50’s character, is so intent on rising above the life of crime that keeps trying to suck him back in, why not develop this angle? Why concentrate instead on a whole host of hoodlums, crime and violence? There are many movies out there whose focus is thugs slinging drugs and capping each other. It makes it very hard to care what happens to characters when there is no development thereof. It’s not 50 that’s the greater problem here, as he does an average job with what he’s given. It’s that the film has no idea what it wants to be, and absolutely no original direction.
