Summary
A notorious car thief comes out of retirement to save his younger brother’s life. To do so, he must reunite his old crew and jack 50 cars in one incredible night of fun!
Review
A remake of a 1974 flick by the same name, Gone in 60 Seconds is a pleasant but ultimately forgettable thrill ride. Randall “Memphis” Raines (Cage) used to rule the L.A. underworld as a car-jacker before skipping town amid increasing pressure from the law enforcement community. Now, Memphis must return to save his younger brother Kip (Ribisi) whose botched attempt to follow in his footsteps landed him in a world of trouble. The Raines brothers, along with their old crew, must steal 50 cars in one night in order to save Kip from a powerful gangster’s wrath. The result? Lots of bad jokes, unrealistic auto heists, high-speed chases and explosions!
This film is good enough to pass the time, but one has to wonder how so many big names agreed to appear in it despite a weak script replete with lame cliches and attempts at humor that fail miserably. Memphis’ old flame, “Sway” (Jolie) is an entirely pointless character, while Duvall does little except take up space as the team’s eldest member. The bright spots are Detective Castelbeck (Lindo) as the conflicted cop trying to put the cuffs on Raines, and the climactic car chase involving a boosted ’67 Shelby Mustang GT 500. You know it’s coming and that it’s going to be over the top, but it’s still great stuff as Raines wrecks half the city evading authorities with stolen car #50. It’s the only thing saving this clunker from the junkyard.
