Review
At first I was skeptical of this movie but seeing that TBS airs it at least twice every weekend, I gave it a shot and to my surprise I was very entertained. This is a very silly, yet true satire of male models and the industry in which they are employed by. The jokes are obvious, the laughs are short but they make sense.
Ben Stiller stars as Derek Zoolander, the biggest male model in the world who is at a crossroads in his career. Young gun Hansel, played by Owen Wilson is the hot new male model and looking to take Derek’s crown. Male models are really dumb. Get it?
I must say though that I like Ben Stiller as more of a character acter, as he is in this movie and the similar, Dodgeball, as apposed to the ‘straight regular guy’ in films like Meet the Parents. I just think he’s better at playing ridiculous comedic characters rather than the guy next door. Will Farrell and Owen Wilson are also very funny, probably garnering most of my laughter.
Of course, the plot really doesn’t matter and takes a back seat to the individual performances but it has something to do with an assassination of some foreign leader. Like I said, it doesn’t matter. My favorite part had to be the gasoline fight though. Only male models would think of that. Don’t expect from this movie and it won’t give you too much in return but if you really like movies that are so dumb they make you laugh, then Zoolander is probably a safe bet.
