Summary
Torn between protecting his family and fighting for his country, a patriot (Gibson) bleeds red, white and blue as he inspires a nation.
Review
Forget for a minute that this epic replete with an inspirational Gibson in the lead and enough battle scenes to satiate the most blood thirsty of our gender arrived in theaters just a few years after the classic, Braveheart. We’ll try our best to ignore the comparisons which, inevitably, would would reduce The Patriot to the woebegone status of Glitter or Catwoman. This tale that centers on Gibson’s character as the patriarch of a large household and a renowned war veteran during the time of the American Revolution isn’t that embarrassing or pitiful. But it ain’t very good, either.
My main objection to this film involves the numerous, supposedly heartbreaking moments it depicts. Movies, in general, should only be allowed to have a certain (small as in one) number of events that tug at the proverbial heart strings. Throughout this film, tragedies occur approximately every six minutes. By the end, not only are you numb to them, you’re almost rooting for the main characters to just die and get it over with.
I’m a big fan of Gibson, but when he’s the nation’s most respected patriot (get the title now?) and you are hoping he makes a heel turn in the end tearing off his American uniform to reveal a red coat and slicing up his own countrymen you know that the film hasn’t exactly made the impact on the audience it was intended to.
