Summary
The paths of a Mexican immigrant and her daughter cross with a rich family from Beverly Hills when the former begins to work as a housekeeper for the latter. Lessons in love and raising children ensue.
Review
Combining two different cultures into one heartwarming tale of love, life and the decisions people make on behalf of their children, Spanglish is simply charming. Sandler rarely even whines or yells as the patriarch of a Beverly Hills family that is comprised of an insecure, crazed wife (Leoni). It’s a welcome change to see the father as the role model of the household (yeah, men!), as Leoni’s obsessive, crazed tendencies cause more harm than good for the couple’s daughter.
Enter the absolutely breathtaking Flor Moreno (Paz Vega) and her child into the picture and the sacrifices that parents make for their loved little ones is on full display. The movie is full of humor and bittersweet moments. There may be some confusion as to who’s story is actually being told here, but as the title suggests, maybe you are not supposed to differentiate: when it comes to being there for your kids, all languages are the same.
