Summary
Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman has been hired to write a film of Susan Orlean’s book, The Orchid Thief. But when Charlie runs into massive writer’s block and personal angst, everything goes out the window.
Review
This movie is very smart. Like smarter than me. I can’t even count how many levels this movie works on but let me try. Within the movie, Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine) is writing a fictional screenplay about The Orchid Thief at the same time he is writing the screenplay for Adaptation. Charlie becomes disillusioned and starts writing himself into The Orchid Thief when he is really writing himself into Adaptation. He wants to stay true to the facts in The Orchid Thief but can’t so he makes up things to make the story more interesting and therefore things starting happening in Adaptation that are false. I could go on.
This movie makes you think about narrative voice, writer’s influence on a story and audience. If you don’t like thinking to be apart of your movie viewing experience, you might want to leave this one on the shelf of Blockbuster. But if you want to see Nick Cage play twin brothers, learn about orchids and watch a really original movie check out Adaptation. Spike Jones Rules.
My opinion
This film is very well written film it worth your time.
