Summary

A year after he and his fiancee are brutally murdered on Devil’s Night, the Crow brings Eric Draven’s soul back to avenge their deaths.

Review

Based on J. O’Barr’s comic, The Crow is a dark, disturbing and violent picture. Nevertheless, some great action sequences and solid performances by the late Brandon Lee and his supporting cast make it well worth your time. The movie’s premise is simple. Eric Draven (Lee) and his girlfriend Shelly are madly in love until a group of gangsters break into their apartment and end their lives on October 30 Devil’s Night. She is gang-raped and he is tossed out of a window. The tragic, graphic nature of their demise makes for badly needed retribution. When a mystical crow descends from the Heavens and brings Eric’s soul back to life a year later to exact revenge on the men who killed him and Shelly, you find yourself rooting for him all the way.

Lee is terrific as the invincible and undead Eric. He is simultaneously menacing, vindictive and emotionally sensitive. As he seeks out his killers one at a time, he wants them all to know the pain they caused him a depression he still carries while thoroughly enjoying the payback process.

Also turning in strong performances are the cop aiding Eric’s quest (Hudson) and the thoroughly detestable crime boss Top Dollar (Wincott). The movie is simple, sometimes too violent and carries on a bit too long, but it’s done with style and includes enough great action scenes to keep you engrossed. The bleak, gothic cinematography is true to the comic-book feel as well.

Random Facts: O’Barr’s real-life girlfriend was raped and murdered he also put Joy Division lyrics in the comic, which connects to Nine Inch Nails covering “Dead Souls” for the soundtrack As is well documented, Lee died of a gunshot wound during filming.
