Summary
It’s been six months since Mike broke up with his girl. His friend trent decides it’s time that he got over it. Much drinking and partying ensues.
Review
Swingers inspired a thousand copycats and made the then underground lounge scene a cultural phenomenon that lasted about three to six months, but that doesn’t mean it’s not one of the funniest guy films of all time, making sure that Vince Vaughn got work as “the sarcastic best friend” for the next decade and establishing actor/writer Jon Favreau and director Doug Liman as people to watch. Favreau’s Mike is a real downer the sort of guy that you’d try to avoid talking to at a party because he’s going to bring up that ex of his that he’s just not over yet. We’ve all known this guy and this is why his awful weekend at the hands of his well-intentioned friend Trent is so funny.
Most romantic comedies (or romcoms as the constantly-abbreviating Hollywood types like to say) suffer for guys because romance is, in itself, not what we want to see we want pratfalls and stumbling and guys doing stupid guy things, and like its obvious antecedent, Diner, this movie makes sure we know these characters and their quirks extremely well before bringing in the inevitable love interest.
If you don’t find yourself using “baby” as punctuation after seeing this and strongly desiring a cocktail, then you’re beyond redemption and you should just go ahead and buy those sweatpants so you can sit in your dark, lonely room and cry to old Cure records. The rest of us will be meeting beautiful babies and being the bear.
