Summary

A terminally ill mother (Sarandon) must deal with her disease and the remarriage of her ex (Harris) to a younger woman (Roberts).

Review

It’s not enough that Jackie Harrison (Sarandon) is a divored mother that must watch as her ex-husband, Luke, falls in love with a younger woman. She must also face the pain of seeing her two children enjoy the company of this supposed home wrecker, Isabel Kelly. As if this weren’t difficult enough for Jackie to deal with, she’s then diagnosed with terminal cancer. It’s just not her movie.

Starring three perpetually likable actors, Stepmom is full of solid performances. It’s also a sweet story, as Jackie realizes that maybe, just maybe, beautiful Isabel isn’t the anti Christ. But the film tugs on one’s heart strings a little too firmly, forcing one sappy, sentimental scene after another on viewers. This loving mother is dying, it’s tragic we get it! We don’t need to watch each painful farewell to everyone she cares about.

There are lessons to be learned about love and forgiveness and those seems fairly important in life. If you’re in the mood for a good cry or twelve good cries, this is definitely the flick for you.
