Summary
A philosophical bum lectures at Harvard, blackmails a student and finds a family.
Review
Joe Pesci is best known for his roles in Goodfellas, Raging Bull and My Cousin Vinny, but without a doubt, Pesci’s portrayal of “Simon Wilder” along side Brendan Fraser is the best performance of his career. When this “Harvard bum” finds the 100 page thesis of Fraser’s character “Monty Kessler”, Wilder uses this paper to buy him food and shelter during a harsh winter. The two learn much more about each other including how Wilder carries everything that has ever happened to him around in his pocket and that Fraser’s father left him at a very young age.
In the end, a family is created and lessons are learned. It’s the simple old lesson of don’t judge a book by its cover, but this movie goes much deeper than that. Watch this movie and you’ll ask yourself how wasn’t Pesci nominated for an Academy Award.
