The Mummy (1932) Review
Universal studios is famous for creating classic horror movies like Dracula, Frankenstein, and the world famous movie The Mummy.
Boris Karloff (im-ho-tep) an ancient egyptian priest uses the sacred Scroll of Thoth to bring back his lover to life princess Anck-es-en-Amon. He was punished by Pharaoh, father of the princess. Pharaoh gave orders to his men to bury him alive.
After 3700 years of this incident a British archaeologist accidentally wakes him up while exploring his tomb in 1920. He becomes alive and obsessed again to find his lost love again.
Many years later he used new name Arthur Bay and started living like a normal person. One day he finds Helen Grosvenor, a modern woman who is a reincarnation of the ancient princess Anck-es-en-Amon. He uses his magical powers to control her and he also tries to keep her fiance Frank Whemple away from her.
This amazing film was directed by Karl Freund. He was famous for his amazing camera skills. He gave this film a dark romantic feel instead of making it a full horror movie. The black and white visuals of the movie looks very beautiful and the music also creates tension and danger time to time.
If you compare The Mummy (1931) to new generation horror movies you will feel nothing scary about this film. But this movie has a very strong atmosphere, a good storyline and a tragic love story which makes this movie still powerful and enjoyable even if you watch this movie today in 2025.
My opinion
The Mummy is a old horror film. It has very beautiful visuals and it shows a tragic love story which makes this movie still relevant and yes you should definitely watch this film.
