The second installment of the movie starts from where the first ends. Sam and Frodo journey closer to Mount Doom and the rest of the Fellowship bands together to fight for Middle Earth.
Skipping all of the information I covered in the Fellowship of the Ring review, I will get right to the good stuff. This movie is amazing and builds wonderfully on top of the Fellowship story line. Instead of doing a typical plot summary, I’d like to talk about the two biggest parts of this movie, Gollum and the Battle of Helm’s Deep.
At first I though Gollum, voiced and actually acted by Andy Serkis, was annoying. But after seeing numerous documentaries on how they created the character digitally with the help of Serkis’ movements, I found a whole new level of respect for the nasty looking guy. He is a huge part of the story and the filmakers got him just right.
Then there’s the Helm’s Deep Battle. Made with real extras on a set built from scratch, this might be the greatest war/battle scene ever filmed. The rain, the explosions, the orks — they all are just amazingly captured by visionary director Peter Jackson. The interplay between Legolas and Gimli is also very humorous in these scenes.
Basically this movie rocks but you really have to have seen the first film to get it. And don’t worry about the talking trees, they may seem stupid but they’re kind of important. Just go for a bathroom break during their screen time if you have to.
