Review
Ian McKellen is a delight to watch in this 20th century take on one of the Bard’s bloodier plays, showing that it’s not all “thee” this and “thou” that, despite the boredom that your English professors seemed determined to instill into the material. You’ll get to see a fair amount of violence, the ever-important requisite amount of explosions, and some great dialogue spat out by people who truly love the material, allowing you to access Shakespeare in a way that you’ve probably not before.
This is certainly much more fun than Kenneth Branagh’s lethargic and overlong Hamlet and could make you look cultured when you’re hanging out with a brainy history major or English lit chick while, in fact, you just want to watch the bloodthirsty rise of a cruel and compelling man.
