Summary:
Will Smith shows you completely in this epic biography that may not tell the complete story, but gives you a snapshot of a man who changed boxing forever.
Review:
Many people have criticized Michael Mann’s biopic about the heavyweight champion who polarized a nation as being a whitewash job the movie ends with Ali defeating Foreman at the Rumble In The Jungle after showing his humble beginnings, discovery of Islam, and ascension in the ring, but they’re missing the point. Ali is about the man as a symbol as much as it is about the person, and leaving the audience cheering at the end matches this perfectly. Yes, there was the decline and attempts at reliving past glory that left him shellshocked, but he’s still The Champ to so many people that tearing down the icon would seem just cruel, especially considering his recent physical debilitations.
Will Smith is more than credible as Ali, which helps sell the movie, thankfully I know I was worried he was going to mug a bit, but it’s obvious that he has quite a lot of respect for the man he was playing. Also quite startling is Jamie Foxx as Bundini Brown, three years before Ray, proving that there’s an Oscar nominee buried in the guy who made Booty Call and you can’t not mention Jon Voight’s hilarious portrayal of Howard Cosell. Hell, even Mario Van Peebles acquits himself well in his brief appearance as Malcolm X, which took him off my list of people to be put against the wall when I lead the Hollywood revolution.
Michael Mann’s direction deserves kudos it’s amazing how compelling he can make Ali’s morning runs and he manages to tell a long story without it being boring at all. This is the template on how to make a biographical movie that doesn’t whitewash events but manages to enthrall and uplift the viewer.
My Opinion
Ali is a very good movie and will smith plays ali perfectly. I am give this movie a big thumbs up must watch movie if you are a sports movie fan.
