Summary:
A swinging bachelor (Law) realizes that there may be more to life than shagging as many women as possible.
Review:
Stop us if you’ve heard this before. A womanizer comes to the realization that life may be about more than how many females he sleeps with. As he looks deep within himself, he sees that he has missed out on many important moments. A shocking, original concept, we know. As if that type of characters were’t cliched enough, this movie is itself a remake and I can only think of one response to that fact it should never have been remade.
To begin with, the story is boring. We’re instantly introduced to Law as Alfie, your typical swinging bachelor that sweeps women off their feet, yet never commits to a single one. He utters trite phrase after trite phrase (I myself subscribe more to the European philosphy of life, my priorities leaning towards wine, women and well that’s about it.) Why should we like this guy? Aside from the fun accent, does he possess any redeemable qualities? The answer to that question truly becomes negative after Alfie sleeps with his best friend’s fiance. The audience is never given a reason to care about whether or not this chauvinist turns his life around we’re too grossed out by his actions.
The movie makes an attempt to open up Alfie’s eyes to love, friendship, responsibility and all that his womanizing ways have caused him to miss, but I was too busy falling asleep to care. When you’re bored and disgusted by the star, not only do you not care about his long-term happiness, you’re basically hoping against it. When Alfie asks, near the end of this horror, “What’s it all about?” I assume he’s talking about life. But he may have been referring to his motivation for forcing people to sit through this self serving crap in the first place.
My opinion
Alfie (2004) is a good movie but we see this kind of movies so many times the story of the movie is very familiar so in my opinion this movie is good but just one time watch.
