Summary

A zombie movie that doubles as a romantic comedy? Yes, and you and your girl will love it.

Review

I don’t like zombie movies, in general. I think that zombies are, frankly, very boring as enemies. Yes, they shamble along and make that fearful noise while desiring your brains, but it seems to me that anyone with a good sprint can pretty much avoid the situation entirely by hoofing down the road a bit. This movie, however, manages to be the exception that proves the rule by giving us lovable loser who wants to win his girl back while a zombie outbreak grips London.

There’s an authenticity to the way these people act in the movie, particularly in the relationship between Shaun and his loser friend Ed and when painful choices are made (as they have to happen in these sorts of movies,) empathy for the leads is natural and one doesn’t feel blatantly manipulated like they do with most horror movies that are being made now. Throw in some great humor, a ripping soundtrack, and Lucy Davis (Dawn from The Office), and you’ve got a fine little movie that’s far better than the genres it swipes from.
