Review
If a good sports movie is based on a true story, the audience still finds itself cheering along at the already-known end. This is one of those films. It seems rather likely that Seabiscuit will triumph as the story unwinds, but prepare to feel the hairs on the back of your neck stand up regardless. Maguire is effective as Red Pollard, the underdog friend and jockey of the heavy underdog star of the movie. As always, Jeff Bridges is also underrated, as he manages to pull off a subdued, emotional performance.
William H. Macy draws laughter as kooky radio announcer, but the most powerful, enduring memories of the film are the bonds created around this horse. All the central characters come from tragedy or sheer solitude, yet they create a most unlikely family as Seabiscuit storms across the nation, winning race after race. Tugging at the proverbial heartstrings without being overly cheesy, this is a feel-good movie that guys and gals will both enjoy.
