Summary
The true story of a down and out, unemployed single mom who finds work as a legal assistant and helps fuel an investigation into illegal activities by a huge power company.
Review
Much as girls love Erin Brockovich, you can do a lot worse as chick flicks go. The fact that this is a true story and one that makes you feel good goes a long way. The title character, played by Roberts, is a single mother without manners or class who can’t catch a break. Her string of bad luck leads her to a car accident in which her efforts to claim damages are derailed. Short of money, she begs her attorney, Ed Masry (Finney) into giving her a job as a legal assistant with his firm. After nearly getting fired on numerous occasions for poor conduct, Erin stumbles across some interesting information that spearheads one of the biggest class-action suits in U.S. history.
As Erin and Ed investigate the shady real estate shenanigans of Pacific Gas & Electric Co., they discover that the energy company is buying land in which it is illegally dumping toxic waste and poisoning local residents. Channeling all of her frustration into leading the firm’s efforts to stop this public health hazard, Erin leads the plaintiffs to an unlikely and satisfying triumph. With Erin’s energy and and Ed’s measured guidance, the chemistry is infallible. Both Roberts and Finney deserve the Oscar nominations they earned for these terrific roles. They make a great team and provide a solid viewing experience for audiences everywhere.
You can’t go wrong with Roberts’ raunchy outfits, either. Just saying.
