Mona Lisa Smile (2003) is a great movie which is based on students and teacher relationship. The movie was set in 1953 at Wellesley College, which is a very strict College for girls. Julia Roberts (Katharine Watson) plays the role of an art history teacher and she is very different from other teachers.
The movie looks very good. The costumes, architecture, and the vibe of the 1950s everything looks just perfect. At that time, women were expected to marry very early and become housewives. This movie shows this very well. Mona Lisa Smile has way to many characters, which makes this movie a little bit a mess.
Betty Warren, is a student who also works for the school newspaper. Betty has a very traditional mindset she thinks women should marry and have families. She does not like Katharine when she arrives at the school. Many teachers and students also dislike Katharine because she comes from California.
Katharine is very surprised that the students only think about marriage. She wants them to think for themselves and choose their own lives. Some students listen to her. Joan is smart. Giselle is confident they are inspired by Katharine, who is single and happy.
Betty is newly married. She is angry at Katharine. She writes a newspaper article saying that Katharine is against marriage and family. Katharine feels hurt, but she fights for students. She keeps teaching students to think freely, even when the college management tries to stop her.
Mona Lisa Smile has so many moments which you will like personally. The movie looks beautiful. The movie is interesting most of the time. Julia Roberts is very kind and confident as Katharine Watson. Kirsten Dunst acts very well in her role.
