Summary

Here’s a story about you guessed it a 40 year old virgin whose friends set out to change his status between the sheets.

Review

This movie could have been a cliche about a dork with a pocket protector and tape on his glasses who snorts when he laughs and can’t make conversation with anyone aside from his Star Wars figurines. But Carell plays a character with far more depth, an employee at a Best Buy like store that lacks normal social skills (and does collect super hero action figures), yet has a personality all his own and can stand up for himself against the so called friends that make it their mission to finally get him some action.

While there are many over the top scenes that include excessive use of a word that’s a synonym for “cat,” as well as a drunk driving fiasco with a potential hook up, the funniest parts are more subtle. Carell’s dry wit and sarcasm from his days on The Daily Show perfectly translate to this forum. You have to listen closely for one liners during the scene in the health clinic, for example, but the laughter makes it worth it.

Taking a basic, banal concept such as losing one’s virginity, this flick gives the audience more depth than expected, including a nice overall message (apparently sex isn’t everything to a relationship). Side splitting laughs are also aplenty.
