Summary

The efforts of a former poker player (Damon) to get his life back on track in law school are derailed when an old playing partner (Norton) comes back into his life.

Review

Talk about a movie being ahead of its time. Could you imagine the box office clout this flick would enjoy if it came out a few years later, as the boom of Texas Hold ‘Em has taken off? As enjoyable as Rounders was when it first hit the theaters, watching it now is like a different experience because the lingo and overall excitement of the game is far more accessible for the common viewer.

Damon stars as Mike McDermott, a card shark trying to live a live on the straight and narrow in law school. He’s doing well for himself until Worm (Norton) gets out of prison and right back into his hustling ways. Choosing to fall back into his old calling of poker as opposed to applying online for debt consolidation Mike enters the shady world of gambling in order to help alleviate a few of Worm’s financial concerns. The results are mixed for him, entertaining for the audience.

The movie partly works because of its two gripping stars. It also tells an intriguing story, using what has become a wildly popular game as the backdrop of a fast paced movie full of moral dilemmas and suspense.
