Review

John Carpenter used to make terrifically entertaining movies and this may well be his apotheosis. A combination of comedy and martial arts flick, Big Trouble In Little China features Kurt Russell’s Jack Burton chewing scenery like it’s got Juicy Fruit stamped on the side in his quest to help save his friend Wang Chi’s fiancee (and sassy reporter Gracie Law, played by Kim Cattrall) from the evil clutches of evil wizard Lo Pan. No, it doesn’t really hold up to close scrutiny, but Carpenter makes you completely believe in the world he creates and there’s more than a few quotable lines.

If you’ve enjoyed other highlights of 80s action cinema like Red Dawn and Rambo, this is a must-watch as it takes the genre and turns it on its ear to the delight of the viewer. We’re taking off a half beer for the god awful soundtrack by Carpenter a more grating panoply of cheap synthesizers and bad guitars would be hard to find.

Also Watch.
